1. POSITION(S) VACANT: Senior Technical Advisor, Nutrition, Vital Strategies/ Resolve to Save Lives, New Delhi

 

2. ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND:

 

Headquartered in the US, Vital Strategies is a respected global public health non-profit organization working in more than 70 countries to strengthen public health systems and address the leading causes of morbidity and mortality.

 

Resolve to Save Lives is an initiative of Vital Strategies with a mission to prevent 100 million deaths from heart disease and to make the world safer from epidemics. With support from prominent US foundations, Resolve to Save Lives collaborates with governments, civil society, multi-lateral organizations, and the private sector, to achieve impact at scale.

 

In India, Resolve to Save Lives partners with the Indian Government, the Indian Council of Medical Research, the World Health Organization (WHO), Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and the George Institute on hypertension control and sodium reduction initiatives.

 

Resolve to Save Lives also partners with WHO, GHAI, and key stakeholders like Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to support the implementation of REPLACE, the WHO technical package for eliminating trans fat from the global food supply.

3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Senior Technical Advisor, Nutrition (STAN) shall work closely with Indian Government at the Central and State levels, including the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and other relevant stakeholders, to develop and implement nutrition policy and other nutrition interventions.

 

The STAN shall report to and work on stakeholder management with the Country Lead/ Resolve to Save Lives, India while receiving ongoing technical supervision and guidance from the Director of Nutrition at Resolve to Save Lives headquarters.

 

S/he shall also collaborate closely with the broader nutrition team at Resolve to Save Lives headquarters. The nutrition work of Resolve to Save Lives focuses primarily on policies and interventions that serve to advance either trans-fat elimination or salt reduction, either on their own or as part of a more holistic nutrition intervention/policy.

 

This is a full-time position that is currently remote but is envisioned being based in the Delhi Office of Vital Strategies.

 

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

 

(A) Overall:

 

(1) Work with the Country Lead and Resolve to Save Lives HQ nutrition team to develop a strategy for Resolve’s nutrition work in India as well as annual work plans including goals, activities and deliverables;

(2) Serve as the Resolve to Save Lives Line Manager for two embedded staff, providing overall support and direction for program activities;

(3) Coordinate with key government partners at national level such as FSSAI and the Ministry of Health to identify opportunities to advance Resolve’s nutrition priorities;

(4) Work with other Resolve partners also operating in India, including the Global Health Advocacy Incubator and WHO, to ensure partners are coordinated and working to advance common goals.

 

(B) Trans Fat (TFA) Elimination:

 

(1) Coordinate with FSSAI and partners to ensure implementation of national TFA limit regulation to include all foods, which goes into effect in January 2022;

(2) Support effective monitoring and enforcement of TFA regulation in key states;

(3) Support the development and capacity building of key labs in India to undertake food testing for trans fatty acids;

(4) Coordinate with Global Health Advocacy Incubator and grantees in-country on the implementation of trans fat elimination strategies.

 

(C) Sodium Reduction:

 

(1) Coordinate closely with sub-grantees, including the Public Health Foundation of India and the George Institute, on the implementation of salt reduction demonstration projects;

(2) Work with ICMR on the testing of salt reduction educational materials within health clinics;

(3) Develop a strategy to scale up successful demonstration projects, including advocacy to key government stakeholders;

(4) Serve as the Resolve to Save Lives point person for a multi-partner effort to support the development and implementation of effective front of pack labeling policies in India, including managing a study on effective front of pack labels, currently being implemented by a contract agency;

(5) Develop state level interventions to promote healthier midday meals, including lower sodium;

(6) Work with embedded staff and other key stakeholders to identify opportunities to advance sodium reduction through policies such as:

(a) Healthy food procurement;

(b) Marketing restrictions on unhealthy, ultraprocessed foods, including foods high in salt;

(c) Taxes on unhealthy, ultraprocessed foods, including foods high in salt;

(d) Adaptation of the WHO salt reduction benchmarks to the Indian context;

(e) Promotion of low sodium salts.

 

4. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

 

Qualification:
(1) Master’s degree in public health, nutrition or international development with at least 10 years of relevant experience;

(2) Advanced degree such as Ph.D. is preferred, but not essential.

 

Experience:
(1) Applicants must have a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience working on nutrition policy, including at least five years working in India;

(2) Experience working in public health;

(3) Experience in public health or nutrition research shall be preferred;

(4) Experience in policy advocacy and work with civil society organizations is a bonus.

 

Skills and Competencies:

(1) Ability to communicate technical knowledge and expertise with clarity and tact in both policy and operational environments;

(2) Excellent written and verbal communications skills in Hindi and English;

(3) Demonstrated ability to work across sectoral boundaries and in diverse, multicultural settings;

(4) Demonstrated ability to work independently to successfully manage projects and complete deliverables.

 

5. COMPENSATION OFFERED:
