2. BACKGROUND:

 

Founded in 1964, Swami Sivananda Memorial Institute of Fine Arts & Crafts (SSMI), New Delhi, is a respected, value driven, non-profit, providing free primary and secondary education to children at a large school in Punjabi Bagh.

 

The Institute also imparts livelihood skills to young women in slums at a sophisticated production and design centre for garments and furnishings and free supplementary nutrition to more than 20,000 pregnant and lactating women and their children, on a daily basis.

 

SSMI’s vision and mission is to empower women and children to achieve their potential with dignity. It does so through research, promotion, provision of services and skill development, in the areas of education, health, nutrition, environment and livelihoods.

3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Position Context

 

The World Health Organization has defined Life Skills as "the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life".

 

With more children, typical as well as special needs learners, showing life skills deficits, it is becoming essential to include Life Skills Training as part of the school curriculum. Life Skills Education in schools promotes healthy decision making, prevents negative and high-risk behaviors, promotes greater sociability, teaches anger control, increases self-esteem and self-confidence and improves academic performance.

 

Further, skills development of children with disabilities is also more effective when it takes place in an inclusive environment through a training program especially curated for their specific needs.

 

SSMI has initiated a Life Skills Training program for the children in its school to enable them to become successful and productive members of society. The goal is for students to achieve transition: going from children in school to young empowered adults who are able to positively face the challenges of the world.

 

Key Job Responsibilities

 

(1) Empower students with life skills, strengthen their emotional intelligence and develop their social skills;
(2) Innovate and create Learning Modules suited to the needs of children at SSMI

(3) Create and maintain a positive learning environment in the school;

(4) Identify barriers and provide support to students with disabilities to facilitate their participation in training and educational programmes in the school;

(5) Engage children with disabilities in the learning process through interactive and innovative training methodologies both in group and individual;

(6) Motivate all children through training strategies, to ensure 100% attendance and school retention;

(7) Provide necessary counseling and training to Teachers, School Staff as well as parents on need basis.

 

4. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

 

Qualification:

Post-Graduate Degree/ Diploma in Psychology/ Human Development/ Guidance & Counseling or related disciplines.

 

Experience

(1) Minimum two years’ experience in similar profile in education sector;

(2) Experience in designing innovative, customized training modules for specific needs of children with disabilities will be preferred;

(3) Experience in Non-Formal Education (NFE) and Adult Education (AE) will be an asset.

 

Skills and Abilities

(1) Understanding of child psychology and child development;

(2) Knowledge of life skills;

(3) Ability to deal with children of all age groups;

(4) Ability to understand and empathize with needs of students and parents;

(5) Sensitive towards Persons with Disability and willing to work with them;

(6) Resourceful;

(7) Strong interpersonal and communication skills;

(8) Confident and with ability to engage with students to nurture their emotional and social being and deal with related issues;

(9) A positive role model for students and teachers.

 

5. NATURE OF ENGAGEMENT:

 

The Life Skills Trainer shall be hired on a full-time employment basis by SSMI.

 

6. REMEUNERATION:

 

The selected candidate shall be paid a consolidated amount ranging between Rs. 35,000-40,000 per month, based on salary history, qualification and experience.
