Reach to Teach (RTT) is an education charity that works with governments and other like-minded organisations to improve the quality of primary education. RTT exists to transform lives of children in remote and marginalised communities in India by focusing on transforming classroom teaching practices and teacher-to-child engagement.


Founded in 2003, RTT has grown into an established charity improving the learning outcomes of children in the state of Gujarat and believes that the most important factor in improving children’s learning is the quality of teaching. RTT’s technical know-how has brought international best practices in education to rural schools in Gujarat and they are committed to continue using these skills to ensure that these best practices are reflected in schools state-wide.


RTT is currently focused on working in coalition with other organisations to support the Government of Gujarat’s work to deliver systemic change to generate better foundational literacy and numeracy outcomes.


GCERT Project


RTT has recently signed an MOU with Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT), the apex institution in the state for the enhancement of qualitative education at primary and secondary schools in Gujarat.


Working closely with the Reach to Teach’s (RTT’s) education leadership resources, the GCERT support programme team will deploy RTT’s expertise and knowledge of international best practices in the development of education professionals to support the GCERT in developing and delivering their programmes. The initial work of the team will involve scoping and understanding the work of GCERT to identify where they will be able to add value following RTT’s mandate to promote quality teaching and learning.

The incumbent shall support the training curriculum intervention within the GCERT Support Programme including designing and writing an effective training curriculum that uses modern techniques of classroom engagement and adult learning principles to affect the overall quality of teaching and learning in classrooms. S/he will start with understanding the current mechanics of training delivery and conduct a gap analysis based on what is working and what needs to change.


The post holder shall implement and operationalise a robust training delivery system that will percolate across the state, district and zonal level trainers and ensure that the same standards are maintained at every level. The incumbent will take effective interventions to help change the mindset around training amongst the teachers and create a sense of pull for attending and motivation for implementing the learnings.


Reporting to the Director - GCERT Support Programme, the Training Design Expert shall be responsible for the following:


Key Roles and Responsibilities:


A. Training


(1) Work with senior members of the education team as well as GCERT to build understanding of the environment and understand the unique challenges as a part of designing a new training module;

(2) Work with GCERT to establish what the learner needs to know and be able to perform to improve learning and teaching in the classroom. Determine what the teachers are expected to deliver, identify gaps and prepare a list of competencies based on that;

(3) Work in collaboration with the Programme Manager, Expert Trainer and government officials to priorities a set of core competencies to focus on and develop key learning objectives for the trainees;

(4) Create standards for measuring results and proficiency for the learning outcomes and help operationalise a system for measuring them periodically;

(5) Use a variety of tools and blended learning approach such as slow-paced, online, trainer-led, experiential and on the job training that is best suited for the programme;

(6) Prepare and write content that supports the use of selected medium and organise learning content in logical steps;

(7) Enable a system for the learners to demonstrate what they are learning with the help of debriefs, group discussions, hands-on practice, etc;

(8) Ensure that the training reflects best practice teaching and learning approaches for foundational literacy and numeracy;

(9) Work with the Programme Manager and government officials to create a training calendar and operationalise the training programme;

(10) Work on the feedback received from a variety of groups such as participants, GCERT leadership, students, and build insights into the programme for continuous improvement;


B. Communication and Stakeholder Management


(1) Build relationship of trust with government employees and continue to strengthen the same. Advise and support the GCERT team (government employees) in the successful implementation of the training programme;

(2) Work effectively with the trainers, government officials and other RTT professionals in co-creating, evaluating and triangulating insights to establish a consistent method and approach;

(3) Work with the Programme Manager, Director, Expert Trainer and Content Development Expert in identifying dependencies, synergies, roadblocks and risks and work in collaboration to mitigate those in time;

(4) Regularly update internal and external stakeholders of progress and changes on project milestones and issues.


C. Teamwork and People Management


(1) Promote and embody RTT’s culture of openness, innovation, involvement, teamwork and performance;

(3) Maintain the highest standards of personal and professional integrity and be a role model for RTT’s values and behaviours;





(1) Applicants must be a graduate from a recognized university;

(2) Post Graduate degree/ diploma/ certification in Education, Training, Social Sciences, HR, Organizational Behavior or relevant field, from an accredited/ recognised institution, shall be an advantage.



(1) Five years’ experience in handling multi-stakeholder projects ideally within the government or education sector

(2) Experience of designing training curriculum, ideally within the education sector;

(3) Experience of working extensively on adult learning principles.


Skills and Competencies:

(1) Knowledge of instructional design, process design and learning management system;

(2) Knowledge of trends and developments in adult learning principles;

(3) Familiarity with effective teaching and learning approaches for foundational literacy and numeracy;

(4) Excellent speaking and writing skills in English;

(4) Ability to read, write and speak in Gujarati at a functional level;

(5) Ability to conduct primary and secondary research for identifying the newest trends and incorporate them in training approach;

(6) Ability to engage and influence teams, create relationships of trust with stakeholders;

(7) Ability to successfully manage project deliverables in stipulated time and budget;

(8) Ability to articulate and communicate well to all stakeholders (both verbally and in writing) in a manner that meets the diverse needs of different audiences;

(9) Ability to think clearly and rationally, understanding the logical connection between ideas;

(10) Ability to identify gaps, opportunities and synergies;

(11) Ability and willingness to travel as per the job requirements.




Gross compensation for the position is attractive. Please note that the offer made to the selected candidate shall be commensurate with qualifications, experience and salary history.
