Sub Regional Team Leader, National Polio Surveillance Project of
World Health Organization, India


The National Polio Surveillance Project (NPSP) of WHO-India is a result-oriented project that works to assist the government in planning and monitoring activities aimed at eradicating polio, strengthening measles mortality reduction strategies and strengthening the routine immunization system in India. NPSP wishes to recruit:

TITLE: Sub Regional Team Leader

DURATION: Special Services Agreement up to 31st December 2014 (To be renewed based on the need of the project and also on the performance of the individual)

LOCATION: Anywhere in India



Under the overall guidance of the WHO Representative to India, Project Manager of the National Polio Surveillance Project of WHO-India and the direct supervision of the Regional Team Leader, with a view to achieve the expected results set out in the relevant WCO-India biennial work plans in accordance with WHO’s Country Cooperation Strategy with India (2012-2017), as part of the WCO-India team working on health systems, the incumbent will have the following responsibilities in the assigned states/districts of WHO NPSP sub region:

1. Work in close collaboration with the state and district government officials in the assigned sub-region and provide strategic vision and technical assistance on polio eradication, measles mortality reduction and improvement of routine immunization coverage.

2. Review and monitor the implementation of activities related to polio eradication, measles mortality reduction and routine immunization improvement in the assigned sub-region and share feedback with the state government and the Project Manager, NPSP, WHO-India, on a periodic basis.

3. As a technical expert of WHO in the sub-region, make presentations, draft reports and strategic documents required for decision making and implementing strategic decisions in the sub-region.

4. Provide leadership and support to the NPSP operations in the assigned sub-region by supervising and guiding the activities of Surveillance Medical Officers (SMOs) of WHO-NPSP through field visits and feedback of analysed data.

5. Liaise with other UN agencies, non-government organizations, professional associations and other stakeholders involved with immunization related activities to seek support for polio eradication, measles mortality reduction and routine immunization activities.

6. Coordinate and oversee the planning of WHO-NPSP activities in the assigned sub-region, their linkages to the financial and human resources planning; and monitor the implementation of these plans.

7. Maintain and submit monthly financial reports as per project guidelines.

8. Any other duty as assigned by the supervisors.


Education Qualification/Experience:

A Post Graduate degree in Community Medicine or Public Health or Pediatrics or any other equivalent degree; and

Experience of working as a public health professional managing large projects with people skills


An MBBS degree with at least 3 years of work experience with WHO-NPSP / Government / UN Organization/Corporates/NGOs

Preference will be given to current and previous WHO-NPSP applicants with demonstrated field immunization and surveillance experience.


The individual should possess:

1. Excellent Communication skills (both written and spoken);
2. Ability to manage, interpret and analyze large data sets;
3. Excellent training and presentation skills;
4. Ability to work in different environments;
5. Excellent leadership skills;
6. Good inter-personal skills.
7. Producing results


The incumbent will receive a Special Services Agreement with the World Health Organization. The starting remuneration will be INR 132,000 per month, taxable as per Indian laws.
