Vision /Mission:

Vision: Health solutions for the poor

Mission: The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) brings innovation, expertise, solutions and support to address health challenges in low and middle-income populations.

History:

The Union was founded in 1920, when 31 countries banded together to fight tuberculosis, one of humanity's oldest and most devastating infectious diseases. Today, The Union is both:

(1) A non-profit Institute with five scientific departments and 14 offices worldwide, and
(2) A federation of close to 3,000 member organisations and individuals who are committed to the same mission.

The Union's activities address major health challenges facing low- and middle-income populations, including: Tuberculosis, HIV, Lung health (including Child Lung Health), Non-communicable diseases, and Tobacco Control.

While these health problems occur in all parts of the world and every sector of society, they create the greatest burden amongst the poor. It is to the alleviation of this burden that The Union dedicates its work.

Established in 2003 as The Union's first regional office, The Union South-East Asia Office (USEA) works in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and other countries across the region drawing on a network of consultants and strong partnerships with governments, civil society, corporations and international agencies. It brings global experience and expertise to its work as well as efficiency and energy to The Union'sservices across the region. It boasts a dedicated staff with technical expertise which reflects The Union’s emphasis on tuberculosis, lung health, HIV, tobacco control, non-communicable diseases and research.

Based in New Delhi, USEA has developed a strong tradition of working with civil society organisations and a reputation of focusing attention on the needs of the poorest in society.

Our Work:

The Union provides technical assistance, education, and research in the areas of tuberculosis, HIV, lung health and non-communicable diseases, tobacco control and research. Adopted by the World Health Organization in 1995, The Union model is part of the internationally

recommended Stop TB Strategy that has been used to treat 37 million people around the world.

Drawing on this first success in addressing TB from medical, political, social and organisational perspectives, The Union has since developed programmes addressing TB/HIV, asthma, childhood pneumonia, tobacco control and other related issues.

The values guiding The Union’s operations across the world are:

(1) Quality: We deliver our services and products to the highest possible standards.
(2) Accountability: We are responsible stewards of resources and deliver on our commitments.
